The dogs are friendly, have a strong bond with their owners and enjoy doing what they do.  You may have from 5 to 12 dogs on your team, depending on the length of the tour.  Be sure to bring a camera: elk and deer are occasionally seen, and other animals like fox, coyote and bighorn sheep have been sighted; in any case, the surrounding mountain scenery is sure to be worth a picture or two.

There are two Crested Butte dog sledding companies: Cosmic Cruisers and Lucky Cat Dog Farm. Tours can last from an hour to an all-day excursion; lunch can be provided during longer trips.  Children may be brought on the tours and have been known to make good drivers as well.

Both companies recommend wearing durable winter clothing, boots, a hat and sunscreen protection.  The movies Snow Dogs and Ironwill are also recommended as background and inspiration for your sledding adventure!

The Resort offers a nice variety of difficulty across its 1,167 acres: from gentle, easy slopes to a challenging descent from the tip of the mountain itself.  With 121 runs to choose from, you’re sure to find something that suits you!

For extra adventure during your day out, look for the Gold Link Terrain Park and Superpipe.  The park was moved from its original location a few seasons ago; in its new place along the Gold Link Lift, crews are able to create a completely freestyle park pod where you can progress between different features along the same fall line.  Crews hope to have the 55-foot wide superpipe in place each season before the Christmas holiday.

Finally, Crested Butte’s peak terrain and Teocalli Bowl are worth extra mentions: after a good snowstorm, both are sure to be filled with fresh, untracked powder that you can make your own path through.  Access to the peak takes a short hike from the top of High Lift, but it’s definitely worth the effort.

Be sure to take advantage of Black Tie ski rentals and fittings before getting out on the slopes. You don’t even have to leave your accommodation; they’ll come to you!

To begin with, a few rides are conveniently accessible right from town.  These include Snodgrass and Lupine Trail, which partly lead across land for grazing and ranching.  During summer months you can also visit the Evolution Bike Park, located on the ski resort’s mountain, and try out the park’s special Skills Zone for obstacles, racing and jumps.

More great options can be found just a few miles away in the Bush Creek, Cement Creek and Kebler Pass area.  One highlight here is Deer Creek, a long loop which begins and ends in town after leading through meadows, aspens and alongside a mountain.  Extra water and food is recommended for the trail’s long duration, although—apart from some long hill sections—none of the trail itself is especially difficult.

No matter what kind of ride you’re looking to go on, the sights that surround you are sure to make it all the more enjoyable.  At 9000 feet in elevation, Crested Butte is surrounded by incredible mountain scenery, and one of the best ways to see as much as you can is by mountain biking.
